From SPELL to TripADeal and Beyond – Byron is the Hub for Business Success

News Spell

When one thinks of the business hotspots of Australia, we think of the major capitals and the business districts of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. While these areas see their fair share of major deals, they aren’t the only places in Australia that produce successful ventures.

In fact, smaller areas such as Byron pack an equally effective punch by encouraging award winning business growth – just ask locals Norm Black and Richard Johnston (the team behind online travel booking company TripADeal) and sisters Isabella Pennefather and Elizabeth Abegg (the team behind acclaimed fashion label Spell & the Gypsy Collective).

Byron is a place where people come to enjoy a more laid back lifestyle, but it seems this balanced approach to life is one that happens to foster business innovation and creativity as well – encouraging entrepreneurs to challenge the status quo and think outside the box.

Is there something in the water?

Founders of the Byron-based fashion label Spell & the Gypsy Collective, sisters Elizabeth Abegg and Isabella Pennefather won the 2016 Telstra Business of the Year Award. They believe a core part of their business success and aesthetic is directly related to Byron, and they even refer to it as the ‘third character’ in the team. Byron’s beauty can frequently be found in the shoots and designs they produce, and the sisters believe that this unique perspective has helped their brands spread like wildfire in international markets. It seems being anchored in Byron helps them stay true to their roots and still find success.

Byron locals through and through

Another local business that has seen incredible success is TripADeal, which has recently been named the fastest growing business in Australia, clocking up an incredible average revenue growth of 401.7% over the last three years thanks to its online travel business offering. Yet despite this, founders Richard Johnston and Norm Black remain happily in their Byron Bay Arts and Industrial Estate offices, employing some 50 locals at the same time.

What is it about Byron?

It seems that just because you get your start in a laid back and relaxed environment, doesn’t mean that you have to check your business ambition at the door. In fact, it is the creative environment of Byron that has the ability to foster business excellence almost effortlessly – and this is unlikely to change anytime soon. It’s no wonder then that so many businesses flock to this small town for inspiration!
